There are over 1.2 million jewelry companies in the world, and because jewelry dates back hundreds of thousands of years, there are billions of pieces of jewelry. That said, metals are one of the most important factors to consider when it comes to choosing jewelry, besides the design, of course. Jewelry sits on your skin, so it needs to be of high quality and durable enough to last a lifetime. Fun fact: The oldest piece of gold dates back to 4500 BCE and it’s still in excellent condition. Gold and sterling silver are the most common materials used in jewelry. 14K gold, 18K gold, and sterling silver each have distinct properties and price points, so we built out a GLD guide to help break down exactly what makes each one different and which one fits your lifestyle best.

What Is 14K Gold?

The purest form of gold is 24K gold. However, it’s extremely soft, and it bends and scratches easily, so it’s not suitable for jewelry. To make gold wearable, ancient artisans discovered that mixing it with harder metals creates a perfect balance, and that’s how we have 14K gold and other tiers.

14K gold contains 58.3% pure gold, and the remaining 41.7% is made of other metals like silver, copper, and zinc. The added metals increase durability and can change the color, like rose gold, which is made by mixing pure gold with copper. 14K gold is also a popular choice for everyday jewelry because it’s the perfect balance of a high gold percentage and hardness, making it more durable and scratch-resistant than 18K gold. GLD’s solid gold collection includes chains, bracelets, and pendants, and all GLD earrings are made with 14K solid gold posts.

What Is 18K Gold?

18K gold is considered a high-purity practical option for everyday jewelry, containing 75% pure gold. This gives it a slightly softer feel than 14K gold, and because it contains more pure gold, its color is richer, deeper, and warmer. 18K gold is unique because it balances two opposite qualities: softness and strength.

GLD’s yellow gold collection uses 18K gold for plating, which is considered the premium standard for jewelry plating. If you want to learn more about our plating process and how durable 18K yellow gold plating is, read our “Is Gold Plated Jewelry Worth It?” blog here.

What Is Sterling Silver?

Similarly to pure 24K gold, pure silver is incredibly soft and can be easily bent, scratched, or damaged. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver mixed with 7.5% copper, or sometimes zinc, which adds the strength needed to make the metal wearable. It usually comes stamped with “925,” which is the hallmark of real sterling silver, and while it's a durable metal, it is also prone to tarnishing. GLD uses 925 silver and electroplates it with a white rhodium finish to prevent silver from tarnishing, make it hypoallergenic, and give it a platinum-like shine. GLD's Sterling Silver collection features a variety of quality chains, earrings, bracelets, rings, and pendants.
