Choosing the Right One for You

When talking about pendants, there are two ways we can drive the conversation. One is highlighting the classic everyday pieces like the cross, ankh, or Jesus piece. Then there’s the GLD approach. This includes the most iconic, 1-of-1 pieces seen across fashion, music, and sports. It also includes unique pieces we’ve introduced to the market that are now seen every day since we started in 2014. These include pieces like the Goat, Plug, 3D Photo pieces, iced-out custom nameplates, and collaborations with the world's most iconic personalities and brands. If you’re new to the world of pendants, check out our guide on what a pendant is and what it means. Here’s our guide on how to choose the right one for you.

The Popular Classics

Choosing the right pendant can feel overwhelming when there are so many styles and sizes available, so we’ll start with the classics. The most popular pieces include cross or religious pendants, dog tags, initial or personalized pendants, as well as gemstone pendants, diamond pendants, and animal pendants.

Crosses are some of the most timeless. You can wear one as an expression of faith or simply as a fashion statement, and they work with almost any chain type and outfit. For some styling inspiration, see our guide on how to style a crucifix. If you’re looking for the right cross, take a look at how to find the perfect gold cross to complete your fit.

Within the religious category, some of our most sought-after pieces include the Icon Jesus, the Masked Angel, and the Italian Horn Pendant. If you’re drawn to the iced-out look, the Large Diamond Cross is the way to go. Check out the full cross pendant collection to compare different styles. You can also browse our full religious jewelry collection for every option available.

The dog tag has become one of the most popular statement pieces in modern jewelry. Some designs also incorporate enamel detailing, adding color that pops and adding texture to the metal surface.

Initial pendants can have many personal meanings. A single letter on a clean chain is subtle, which makes it a great everyday option. Check out our roundup of timeless pieces that go with any fit

Personalized pendants include custom engravings, names, significant dates, and photos. Our 3D Photo Pendant turns your favorite photos into a piece you can wear. Customizing allows you to get super creative when making a one-of-a-kind piece. If you need a bit of inspiration, here are 5 ideas for making your own custom photo chain

Gemstone and diamond pendants offer that touch of luxury with a brilliant shine. You can go with different colored gemstones like emeralds, rubies, or sapphires. Our Ruby Stone and Hanging Rose Pendant in rose gold are some great options in that category. If you love the look of diamonds but want a more accessible option, moissanite gives you a similar shine for less. Take a look at our list of 10 pendant styles with stones guaranteed to draw attention. We also have a guide to diamond jewelry that showcases standout designs specific to men.

Animal pendants are another popular style. Everyone has their spirit animal, and some of our bestsellers include the Iced Lion and the Eagle Pendant in White Gold. Explore our animal pendant collection to find the one that best represents you.

Where GLD Changed the Game: 1-of-1 Custom Pieces and Collabs

At GLD, we’ve created some of the most iconic pieces of jewelry in the world. We’ve brought new pendants to the market like our GOAT, Plug, and 1 of 1 Pendant. We’ve also collaborated with icons in fashion, sports, and music to create unique pieces and drop full collections. But let's start with the GLD logo.

The GLD Logo Pendant

Our signature GLD logo chain has been worn by winners on podiums across the largest stages such as the Super Bowl, the College Football National Championship, and the X Games. Breanna Stewart rocked it on the podium after winning the Unrivaled championship and MVP, while Elijah Sarratt wore the GLD logo pendant when Indiana University won the NCAA College Football National Championship. Every GLD piece is designed to shine and show up in the moments when winners shine. Now let’s take a deeper dive into some of our iconic collabs.

Showing Up in Every Sport

We understand the significance of representing your team, so we created officially licensed sports pendants featuring logos from leagues like the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, WNBA, MLS, and NCAA. If you’re a college sports fan, student, or alum, check out 10 NCAA pieces that make perfect March Madness merch.

GLD’s X Games Gold Medal

We’re always pushing the boundaries of design, and our partnership with X Games Aspen 2026 is the perfect example. We created a custom gold medal for the Knuckle Huck Challenge, which is a non-traditional event meant to push the boundaries of snowboarding. The X Games Knuckle Huck Gold Medal Pendant is unique because it doubles as a four-finger ring that can be worn. Different, we know.

NBA Pendants

GLD is at every important moment in sports, and we created the NBA All-Star pendant for this year's game in Los Angeles. When Chris Paul, arguably one of the best point guards ever, made his decision to retire from the game during that weekend, we were there. To commemorate that moment, we gifted CP3 a custom VVS diamond chain featuring his owl logo. We also have a collection of officially licensed NBA team logo pendants that feature every team in the league.

NFL Pendants

We’ve created pieces featuring the official NFL Super Bowl logo multiple times, which was worn by a myriad of stars including Cardi B, Druski, and more. In Super Bowl LVI, we redesigned Snoop Dogg's Death Row pendant for his historic halftime performance. Among NFL stars who regularly wear GLD, we created customs for Micah Parsons that include both lion and portrait pendants. Beyond football’s biggest moments, we also became an officially licensed partner with the NFL to create a collection featuring pendants from every team.

Hip-Hop and Artist-Inspired Pendants

Speaking of Snoop, hip-hop’s pendants are among the most iconic pieces. Hip-hop culture has always been at the forefront of design, pushing the boundaries of creativity. Pendants become synonymous with the brands of artists and labels, and we are naturally a part of that history. One of our collaborations includes the Death Row pendant, and this wasn’t the only time we’ve highlighted one of hip-hop’s culture-defining labels. Another collaboration that holds a special place in the GLD vault is our Cash Money Records Chain, which was limited to 500 pieces, each of which was signed by the CEO of the label, Birdman. For a list of a few more of our collabs, take a look at hip-hop pieces you can wear from your favorite artists.

Rolling Loud Pendants

Another set of classic GLD pendants is our Rolling Loud pieces. We’ve created customs for several Rolling Loud concerts, including stops in Los Angeles, the Bay, Miami, Oakland, and more. They usually become the centerpiece of the concert, where artists rock them throughout the day and on-stage during performances. This includes everyone from Rihanna to Lauryn Hill.

Artist Collab Pieces and Collections

We’ve had some of the best collab pieces and collections in hip-hop. Some artists have come to us to create some of the wildest designs like Trippie Redd’s light-up skeleton, and some artists have inspired collections like Juice Wrld’s collab. Artists like 21 Savage have inspired GLD pieces like the classic Issa Knife, and recently we partnered with Harlem’s fashion icon Bloody Osiris for an exclusive capsule collaboration. We also partnered with Fivio Foreign for his official collection.

Choosing the Right Chain Length for Your Pendant

Chain length is just as important as the piece itself. Its placement on your chest affects how the entire piece looks. For a deep dive into this topic, our detailed guide on how to choose the right chain covers everything you need to know. For go-to combo ideas, start with our 5 ideas for matching pendants and chains. Here’s a quick reference chart for choosing the right chain to match.

Chain Length

Style Name

Where It Sits

Best For

14”–16″

Choker

Snugly around the neck

Small, delicate pieces with open necklines

18″

Princess

Just below the collarbone

The most versatile length; great for everyday pieces

20”–22″

Matinee

Mid-chest, between collarbone and bust

Medium to large pieces; ideal for layering

24″

Opera

At or below the bust line

Dramatic statements; works over turtlenecks and high necklines

30″+

Rope

Well below the bust

Doubling up for a layered effect or creating bold, elongating looks

The Perfect Pendant for Each Shirt

The neckline of your shirt, jacket, or sweater affects how your pendant sits. The goal is to let it complement your outfit without getting lost or feeling crowded.

  • V-neck: Choose one that follows the V-shape of your shirt. A chain around 18”–22” creates a clean, proportional line.

  • Crew Neck/T-shirt: A piece on a 16”–18” chain sits just above the fabric, creating a focal point without overcrowding the neckline.

  • Turtleneck/sweater: Go longer. A pendant on a 24+ inch chain worn over the fabric creates a bold, streamlined look. Perfect for layering over knitwear in colder months.

  • Button-down/collared shirt: A shorter chain (16”–18”) with a piece tucked just under the collar adds subtle detail without being flashy.

  • Henley or open-neck shirt: An 18"–22” chain works well with a piece that sits naturally in the opening, keeping the look balanced and casual.

Other Key Factors When Choosing a Pendant

Weight and Durability: Heavier pieces will require sturdier chains. If you’re wearing a large iced-out pendant or a chunky custom piece, pair it with a rope chain, Cuban link, or wheat chain that can handle the weight without breaking. Lighter pieces, like a small initial or a delicate gemstone, work best on finer chains such as a cable, box, or snake chain.

Visual Proportion: The key to the right combination is simply balance. A small pendant gets lost on a thick chain, and a bold one on a paper-thin chain looks like the chain is about to break. Match the visual weight of the chain so neither element dominates the other. As a general rule, the chain should be visible but should not compete with the pendant for attention.

Style Matching: A sleek, modern pendant is a natural pair with a smooth snake chain or a clean box chain. A vintage or ornate piece goes perfectly on a classic cable or Figaro chain. For the bold, louder looks, an oversized pendant on a Cuban link chain is the best move. If you need a little inspo for summer ‘26, check out our Cuban link combo ideas to rock this summer.

Layering: When you do it right, layering multiple necklaces and pendants creates a curated look that never fails. Here are more key principles to keep in mind.

  • Vary your lengths: The most important rule of layering is using different chain lengths so each piece is visible. A common approach is to start with a shorter chain (16”–18”) and add progressively longer pieces at 20, 22, and 24 inches. This creates a cascading effect that draws the eye downward and adds depth to your look. Another approach is layering related pieces on the same chain. This is done intentionally, of course, and requires a heavier chain that can hold the weight. Think A$AP Rocky’s A$AP pieces.

  • Choose the main piece: When layering, pick one piece to be the star of the show. The other chains should support and frame that piece, not compete with it. A bold cross pendant or an iced-out charm makes a great main piece, with simpler chains and smaller pieces playing the supporting roles.

  • Mixing textures: Combining different chain styles can add to your look. Think about the combination of a Cuban link with a rope chain and a cable chain. The one thing to consider is keeping the metal tones consistent. Mixing gold with gold or silver with silver keeps the look cohesive. You can also get creative with it and layer your sets in specific tones like our rose gold and white gold collections. If you do mix metals, keep it tasteful.

Caring for Your Pendants

Pendants deserve proper care to keep them looking their best over time. Here are a few simple habits that can make a huge difference.

  • Store individually. Keep each in its own soft pouch or compartment to prevent scratching and tangling with other pieces.

  • Remove before showering or swimming. Water, soap, chlorine, and salt can tarnish metals and dull stones over time. Take your pendant off before getting in water.

  • Clean gently. A soft cloth and warm soapy water are all you need for routine cleaning. Avoid abrasive chemicals or rough materials that could scratch the surface.

  • Put your jewelry on last. Apply cologne, lotion, and hairspray before putting on your jewelry. Chemicals in grooming products can build up on the metal and stones if applied directly.
